Leash Your Dog: Protect Wildlife, Your Pet, and Others
Take a Hike!
While exploring the beauty of Rappahannock County and its surrounding areas, it’s essential to keep your dog on a leash at all times. Not only is this a Shenandoah National Park requirement, but it also helps protect the delicate balance between wildlife, visitors, and your pet.

Rappahannock is home to a wide variety of wildlife—including deer, black bears, snakes, and smaller animals. An unleashed dog may instinctively chase wildlife, potentially leading to dangerous encounters or injury. Even well-trained dogs can react unpredictably in a new environment filled with unfamiliar sights and scents.
Leashing your dog also ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for fellow hikers/ visitors. Not everyone is comfortable around dogs, and narrow trails or busy viewpoints can quickly become stressful if pets are not under control.

Both trails listed below welcome dogs—as long as they remain leashed—making them great choices for a memorable day outdoors together.
Not up for a big hike? No worries, try out some walking path or scenic strolls!
For a more relaxed way to explore the area with your dog, local walking paths offer beautiful scenery without the elevation of a mountain hike. These trails are perfect for a peaceful morning stroll or a gentle evening walk along the water.
River Walk (Sperryville Trail Network)

The River Walk winds through the heart of Sperryville, following the scenic Thornton River for a peaceful, easygoing experience. This 1.5-mile network meanders through open fields, wooded areas, and charming village spots, offering a unique blend of nature and local culture.
Along the way, you’ll find beautiful views of the river and surrounding mountains, as well as access to shops, galleries, and local eateries. Dogs are welcome but must remain leashed and on the trail to help protect wildlife and preserve the natural habitat.
Riverside Preserve

Set along the Rappahannock River, Riverside Preserve offers a more expansive natural setting with nearly 200 acres to explore. The preserve features multiple walking trails, river access, and open spaces ideal for a quiet outing with your dog.
In addition to walking paths, visitors can enjoy picnicking areas and scenic river views in a designated wildlife sanctuary. While the river is a highlight, caution is advised due to strong currents and natural hazards.
These paths are shared with wildlife and other visitors, so keeping your dog leashed and staying on marked trails helps ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Don’t forget to bring water and clean up after your pet to help preserve these beautiful spaces.
Dog Friendly Wineries and Breweries
While many wineries and breweries welcome dogs, policies can vary. Always keep your dog leashed, be mindful of other guests, and bring water to keep your pup comfortable. A little preparation ensures a great experience for everyone.
